Kru Noah Tetley
Hi, i’m Noah, the owner and head instructor at MSA-Exeter Muay Thai. I was born in Exeter and started training in Muay Thai over 25 years ago and it has since ever been my passion to learn and to teach others. As a student and understudy of the renowned Grand Master Sken, I regularly develop my skills and knowledge so i can be a valuable source of information to others.
Muay Thai has helped me to overcome my fears in life and to develop courage, fitness and mental resilience. Muay Thai is becoming more and more famous in the UK as a ring sport so its also my goal to maintain the teachings of Muay Boran, and ancient martial art with a long history and tradition. It’s fitness and wellbeing for your body and mind, self defence, a martial art and a ring sport and has helped me , and will help you to “become a champion in life”(GM Sken).
Grand Master Sken

GM Sken is the current Chief Instructor of MSA Academies and continues to pass on his wealth of knowledge to his Masters (Arjarn’s) and Instructors (Kru’s) how have the privilege to share this knowledge with others like you.

What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai, which translates to “Thai Boxing,” is a traditional martial art from Thailand and its history can be traced back over 3000 years. It is often referred to as the “Art of eight Limbs” because it uses eight points of contact—fists, elbows, knees, and shins—as opposed to other combat sports that primarily rely on two (fists) or four (fists and feet). At Master Sken Academies you will hear it referred to as a “Art of 9 Limbs” with the most important “limb” being your “head” or rather using your mind.
Muay Thai has its origins on ancient battlefields. It evolved as a practical combat skill for Thai warriors, developed for close-quarters combat . The martial art uses the body’s eight contact points—fists, elbows, knees, and shins—as weapons, making it effective for self-defense and military purposes.

During the reign of King Naresuan (1590 – 1605), Muay Thai became a part of military training. Muay Thai as a sport came into its own during the reign of Pra Chao Sua ‘The Tiger king’ (1703 – 1709) and every village staged its own prize fights with young, old and rich. The Tiger King himself was a highly skilled boxer and would enter events wearing a disguise and defeat local champions; some strategies still used today can be attributed to hisstyle of boxing.
In the 1930s, Muay Thai went through a transformation and a number of rules were introduced. Boxing gloves, groin guards and weight categories were included, making it a more humane sport; formerly, fights only wore hemp rope around their hands and this was sometimes dipped in glue and rolled in fragments of glass for grudge fights.

What size gloves do i need?
For adults we recommend 12/14oz gloves for women and 14oz gloves for men for training if you plan to use one pair for both pad work and sparring. You can however use bag gloves or lighter gloves e.g. 8oz for pads if you wish and 16oz gloves are also suitable for sparring.
Children’s gloves depends largely on size and weight and will generally be 6/oz/8oz/10/oz/12oz. Children will take part in light sparring but this will be body sparring only, no head contact.
